Commonwealth Games: 12 Wrestlers To Represent Nigeria
The President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Daniel Igali, yesterday said 12 wrestlers would represent the country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia next month.
“The team comprises six male and six female wrestlers in the various weight categories,’’ he told Tidesports source.
Igali listed the female wrestlers to include 2014 Commonwealth champion Odunayo Adekuoroye in the 57kg category and eight-time African champion Blessing Oborududu in the 68kg category.
“Others are Commonwealth bronze medalist Blessing Onyebuchi in the 76kg category, 2014 Commonwealth champion Aminat Adeniyi, two-time African champion and 2015 African Games gold medalist Mercy Genesis in the 50kg category, and African champion Bose Samuel in the 53kg category,’’ he said.
The NWF president said those in the male category include 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Sinivie Boltic, in the 125kg, and six-time African champion Amas Daniel in the 65kg category.
“The rest are African champion Melvin Bibo in the 86kg category, Commonwealth silver medalist Welson Ebikewenimo in the 57kg category, former African champion Soso Tamarau in the 97kg category and Amos Assizecourt in the 74kg category,’’ he said.
Igali also explained the reason behind the non-inclusion of John Ogbonna-Emmanuel, currently ranked world number one in the 70kg freestyle category by the United World Wrestling (UWW), in the national team.
“He was not selected because he is in a non-Commonwealth Games weight class,’’ the NWF president said.
He said the wrestlers picked for the Games were selected at the Gov. Wike Wrestling Championship held in Port Harcourt last year.
“We used tournaments to select the teams. But if there is a compelling case, we make decisions in the best interest of the country,” Igali explained.
Tidesports source that Boltic will be making his fourth Commonwealth Games appearance, while Amas and Oborududu will also make their respective third appearance.
Tidesports also reports that the wrestlers have been in camp for about a month in Yenagoa and Port Harcourt preparing for the Games.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
