Stop Interfering In Our Affairs, Alumni Tell RSUST Authorities
The Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Alumni Associaiton wants the authorities of the university to stop interfering in the affairs of the association.
The immediate out-gone National President of the association, Dr Gladson Nwokah, who stated this in an interview with The Tide during the 2016 National Convention of the body at the Amphitheatre of the university last weekend, decried the situation whereby the authorities of the institution dictated who should be the association’s President.
Nwokah, who is now an Associate Professor at the RSUST, described such situation as unhealthy as the university management had no authority and right over the association, which is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Saying that the association was a body of its own, he maintained that its members were capable of piloting their affairs, pointing out that they would resist any attempt by the university authorities to treat the members and students with disdain.
Outling the achievements of his executive, Nwokah said it built and equipped the Alumni National Secretariat Complex which was commissioned by Governor Nyesom Wike, who is also an alumnus and visitor to the RSUST, commenced the building of a 10-bedroom alumni guest house, which is 90 per cent completed, purchased and maintained an alumni bus, among other things, and enjoined the new executive to do more for the association and the alma mater.
In her address as chairman of the occasion, Barrister Sylvia Brigidi, who described the convention as a home coming of the old UST students, charged them to be good ambassadors of their alma mater whenever they find themselves.
She urged them to use their present positions to support their alma mater and current students to make them feel their impact while urging the university authorities to cooperate with the association in order to take the institution to greater heights.
