Commuters Call For Work On Igbo Etche Road
Commuters plying the
Eleme Junction/Igbo Etche road are now groaning following the poor conditions of the road.
Igbo Etche, which comprises of several communities in Etche Local Government Area, is one of the densely populated part of Rivers State.
The area also houses a Rivers State Government Housing Estate with over hundred fears of various sizes being occupied by Rivers State Government employees. Investigation however revealed that the road which runs from the Eleme Junction section of the East/West road to Imo State, is in a serous state of disrepair.
Some sections of the road, The Tide learnt is also cut off by erosion, thereby making movement in and out of the area difficult. Sources revealed that attempts by the immediate past administration to construct the road was disrupted by some youths of the communities who demanded for marching ground.
Unconfirmed report even had it that the contractor working the road was kidnapped by some youths, following his failure to pay marching ground.
A bus driver, Mr Sampson Iti told The Tide that the condition of the road is making things difficult for both drivers and residents of the communities.
Mr Iti, claimed that armed robbers are now using the bad spots on the road to trap vehicles and rob its occupants of their belongings.
The respondent who hails from Edegelem community, appealed to the Rivers State government to include the road in its development project.
Another respondent, Mr Chidi Ume also said that individual communities in the area such as, Chokota, Umuogodo and Edegelem also lack access road.
He said that the area is also prone to flooding following the increasing amount of rainfalls in the area and stressed the need for Governor Wike to visit the area to assess the state of the road by himself.
Other respondents who also spoke with The Tide said that the situation is affecting food production in the state as evacuation of agricultural produce is being hampered by the poor condition of the road.
