‘inec Incompetent To Conduct Elections’
The Independent Na
tional Electoral Commission(INEC) is incompetent to conduct free and fair elections in the country, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George has said.
Speaking at a Breakfast Television Programme in Lagos recently, Dr. Tam-George noted that the pattern of inconclusive elections by INEC shows that the body lacks the capacity to produce an objective and credible exercise that would be acceptable to the people.
He pointed out that by holding nocturnal meetings with chieftains of the All Progressives Congress( APC), the electoral body has shown clearly that it was colluding with the party to frustrate Rivers people from having representatives at the National Assembly.
The Commissioner noted that for the process to be above board, INEC should ensure that independent people are used as electoral officers and that documents used for elections have security codes that are vetted by all stakeholders.
“ Rivers State Government will support INEC to conduct free and fair elections but trust has to be earned. This will show when the electoral umpire is manifestly independent up to the point that the people are allowed to make their own choices”, he declared.
