Car Snatching: Police Nab 14 Suspects
After a long period of
siege caused by miscreants across the length and breadth of Calabar metropolis and its environs the Cross River State Police Command says it has arrested 14 persons suspected to be involved in car snatching and other criminal activities in Cross River State.
The suspects are said to be cooling their feet in the police cell at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Diamond Hill, Calabar.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Jimoh Omeiza Ozi-Obeh, while briefing journalists in Calabar on the achievements of his Command, said the suspects were undergoing investigation, adding that they would soon be charged to court to face prosecution.
The Cross River State Police boss maintained that some of the suspects particularly Emmanuel Okoye, Timothy Ogoji and others who were under the police custody were being held for being in possession of a snatched Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) which was stolen in Calabar and were subsequently trailed by the police to Abuja.
Reacting to the allegation, one of the suspects, Mr. Emmanuel Okoye, who claimed to be an auto mechanic and indigene of Okwa, in Anambra State stated that police picked him and a friend of his, one Mr. Timothy Ogoje, a native of Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State for allegedly taking custody of an SUV Lexus Jeep given to them by one Emeka who was now said to be at large to effect some repairs .
Also speaking, the second suspect who claimed to be a graduate of Banking and Finance at the Kogi State University stated that he was not a thief even though he had known Emeka to be a family friend.
He said that Emeka only dropped the car with them and travelled out of Abuja for a business trip.
The Cross River Police helmsman stated that on July 11, 2016 at about 1330hrs, (1:30pm), a team of Anti-Robbery Squad from the state Criminal Investigations Department led by Inspector Samuel Umeh on routine security patrol, along Jonathan By-pass, intercepted a man by name Umeh Udofia Okon, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, who claimed to be a Moslem by religion with a bag containing five run-way lights and its poles.
When he was questioned, the suspect confessed that he vandalized FAAN equipment the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, adding that the matter would be charged to court after investigation had been concluded.
