NBA Building Collapse: Expert Wants Prosecution Of Contractor
The National Vice
President of the Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESY), Emma Wike has called for the prosecution of the contractor handling the construction of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) building in Port Harcourt.
He said that the contractor should be held responsible for the partial collapse of the building if it was found that he did not follow the specification given by the engineer.
Wike who disclosed this to newsmen in Port Harcourt while reacting to the partial collapse of the NBA building said that some contractors could on their own decide to use materials that were not recommended by the engineer.
He said that one major thing that could cause such structural defect in a building was the use of inferior or inadequate materials for construction.
According to him, let further action or work on the building be suspended until full investigation on the cause of the partial collapse of the structure was carried out.
Wike who is the former Chairman of NIESV in Rivers State and the Principal partner of Emma Wike and partners (State Surveyors and Valuers) also frowned at the non-challant attitude of some project supervisors.
“I commend the steps taken by the NBA to carry out an independent integrity test on the structure so a to ensure that the building will be safe for use”, he said.
The NIESV leader therefore called on those in the building sector to be more vigilant on issues of project construction so as to ensure safety of lives.
