NAOWA Partners CRSG On Widows’ Empowerment
As part of efforts to alle
viate the suffering of widows in the barracks, the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) in Calabar, struck a partnership deal with Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs.
The wife of the Commander, 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Calabar, Mrs. Fatima Mohammed, disclosed this when she led the group to pay a courtesy visit on the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Stella Odey.
According to Mohammed, who is NAOWA’s coordinator in the state, the association desires the logistic support of the women’s ministry to sustain her orphan and widows programme in the barracks.
She said “NAOWA is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation with the objectives of assisting the poor and the needy as well as raising the standard of living in the barracks and its environs.
“Ma, we will love to partner with your office in order to actualise our outline goals as we implore you to favour us with the following requests: that you assist us in ensuring the continuity of the Support Orphan and Widows (SOW) programme; that you graciously support the association in her quest to establish a vocational center for women and youths empowerment in the barracks.”
Responding, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Stella Odey, expressed joy over the visit, disclosing that her ministry and the association share common goals.
Odey, who described the association as ‘micro women affairs ministry’, expressed the ministry’s readiness to partner the group.
“The goals of the ministry just like those of your association include the socio-economic empowerment of the womenfolk in the states. Now that we know that there is a smaller ministry of women affairs in the barracks, we would like to partner with you because it makes our work easier,” she said.
