The Youth And Nation Building
Youth refers to both male and female who are
between the ages of 14 and 40 years of age who are full of vigour, spirit, freshness and vitality for the actualisation of a vision or dreams. Thus, the youth constitutes a critical reference group in a society or country that cannot be ignored. They constitute a representative of the future in the broadest sense. They equally have the potential to fulfil strategic objectives in the society. The youth are enthusiastic in their search for knowledge and enhance growth and development. Hence youths are scripturally obliged to obey their parents.
Youths are backbone to the nation. They can change the future of the society with their well being and courageous behaviours. They are here to show us that which we have not been willing to look at within ourselves. Therefore, the roles of the youths in nation building inter alia are;
They should constitute a unifying force in the society.
They should refrain from political thuggery, militancy, suicide bombing, terrorism, drug peddling and other social vices in the society. They should be able to fight criminality and other forms of social vices and expose such vices where they are found to exist.
They should be custodians of the constitution and laws of the land.
They should respect constituted authorities.
They should channel their energies toward peace building and engaging in patriotic activities.
The clarity of the roles of the youths as outlined above in this paper cannot just be dispensed with unilaterally without some internal and external aids or synergy, as the parents, government and the society in which they live in also have responsibilities towards proper upbringing of the people in the society.
The primary persons and place of upbringing of any human being especially the youth are the parents and the home. If the right values, virtues, orientation, and proper training are not given as the child develops with them, it all means the immediate and larger society will reject such person and the child becomes a shame or embarrassment to both the parents and the society.
The government on its own should create an enabling environment for the youth to strive and succeed such as the provision of development programmes like education, employment sports/recreation. The various rules, laws and regulations must be pursued to the letter as any defaulter is brought to justice which will act as a deterrent to others. The issues of cultism, terrorism, thuggery, killings, kidnaping, drug peddling and other social vices which have become the order of the day should be seriously and vigorously looked into.
The National Orientation Agency, Rivers State in keeping with its mandate has organised several lectures, seminars, conferences and training for youths in the State which border on their roles and how to refrain from ill or social vices in our society. Therefore, it is our hope that the youths should leverage on these programmes and other efforts of government to be a better people in the course of building our nation.
The role of the youths in nation building is quite herculean and tasking as it is not a “one man thing” but a collaborative effort of all stake holders; the youths, government, parents and society at large.
The youths have a desire to achieve and be recognised as people who matter in the society, they therefore are prone to imitating achievers in society, that is why there has to be a synergy from all stakeholders to achieve this; but more importantly, for youths to enhance their role in nation building, they should imbibe good values and do the right thing so that our nation can be built on a better foundation.
