PH Residents Protest Blackout …As PHED Seeks Law Against Vandalism
Residents of NEPA Water
front, located behind Moscow Road Office of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) in Port Harcourt local government area last week protested continued power blackout in the area.
The protesters which comprised of youths, women and parents accused PHED of insensitivity to their plight.
Mr Ronald Derefakasi, the chairman of the area, who spoke to newsmen said inspite of series of complaints to PHED office, the power firm had not shown concern.
He alleged that electric poles and transformer collapsed in the area and threw the community into darkness and efforts to get authorities of PHED to attend to the issue had not yielded any positive result.
He explained that inspite of promises made by PHED to fix the problem, the problem had remained thereby frustrating socio-economic life in the area.
Reacting to the protest, Public Communications Manager of PHED, Jona Iboma, promised that the matter would be resolved and stressed the need for any such matter to be reported first to the business unit before embarking in any protest.
Meanwhile, the acting Managing Director of PHED, Matthew Edevbu, has appealed to the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA)to make laws that would check rampant cases of vandalisation of electricity equipment in the state.
Edevbu made the call when the RSHA committee on power paid a visit to the headquarters of the company in Port Harcourt.
He noted that vandalisation of power equipment was hindering electricity supply and distribution to the masses.
In his speech, Chairman of the Committee on Power, Hon Abiye Pepple, promised that the Assembly would take steps to protect power installations in the state.
