Lagos Chamber Of Commerce Urges Economic Diversification
The Chairman, Agricul
ture and Non-Oil Group, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Wale Oyekoya, has called on the government to diversify the nation’s economy from oil to agriculture and solid minerals.
Oyekoya made this call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos recently.
According to him, the diversification of the economy is necessary in view of continuous fall in the price of oil in the international market.
‘’The dwindling prices of oil are not good for the nation’s economy.
“Right now, a barrel of oil is $38 dollars compared to this time last year when it was about $140 dollars per barrel.
‘’That is like one quarter of what the nation is getting from oil.
‘’This is why we are saying that it is high time we diversified our economy from oil to agriculture and natural mineral resources’’, he said.
Oyekoya said government had a lot to do in the face of the dwindling earnings from oil to sustain the economy.
According to him, the Federal Government gets 90 per cent of its income from oil and this drop in oil price is really affecting the nation’s economy adversely.
He said there was need for the government to be proactive in ensuring food security in the country.
Oyekoya said nothing was moving in spite of the fact that “this is festivity period.’’
According to him, government must develop the political will to move the nation forward in this direction.
