Ghana Pledges Support For SMEs Dev In Nigeria
Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Mr Gideon Quarcoo, on Thursday pledged the authority’s support for the development of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.
Quarcoo made the pledge while delivering a speech to mark Ghana’s Special day at the ongoing Lagos International Trade Fair at Onikan, Lagos.
According to him, Ghana has traditionally depended on cocoa, timber, gold and other unprocessed minerals as its main exports until it was forced to diversify into export.
He noted that the theme of the 2015 Trade Fair, “Enhancing Value Addition in the Non-Oil Economy”, came at a time when the authority had committed itself to uplifting SMEs.
He said that GEPA was committed to fulfilling the desired goals of SMEs which were adding value to its raw materials and agricultural products.
“GEPA in collaboration with the Manufacturing Division of Ghana’s Ministry of Trade and Industry has supported some SMEs to acquire quality certification of Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority FDA.
“And also the certification of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria.
“We are also building capacities of most manufacturing firms to qualify for the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) which will enable them have duty-free and free access quota to the ECOWAS market,” Quarcoo said.
He said that Ghana planned to establish permanent exhibition centres to operate as Export Trade Centres, where the markets would be run by locals in the supporting countries.
“It is our wish to locate a suitable partner from Nigeria to operate the Ghana Trade Centre which will serve as a source for Ghanaian products and services,” Quarcoo added.
