Retirement Committee Chairman Cautions On Credible Record
Pension Desk Officers and Accountants in the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State, have been advised to submit credible records of the status of their LGAs to the Retirement Committee to enhance service delivery to the people.
A Commissioner in the Local Government Service Commission and Chairman, Retirement Committee of the Commission, Barrister Theophilus Owhor made the call during an interactive meeting with Pension Desk Officers of the 23 Local Government Areas at the NULGE Complex in Port Harcourt.
Barrister Owhor who stated that the meeting was purely interactive said desk officers would be called upon at some point to make input, adding that the Pension Committee had already outlined the work it intends to do, stressing that their beat is to man the retirement committee.
He said “why I said the meeting is going to be interactive is that at one point I am going to be asking for input from you”.
He described the Pension Desk Officers and Accountants as a critical element in the work of the committee, adding that the success of the Pension Committee largely depended on their contribution and called for collaborative effort.
Barrister Owhor reminded the desk officers that on their assumption of office as retirement committee, the chairman of the commission had mentioned to them about the pension unit he set up during his previous tenure and the premium placed on the gesture, and charged the desk officers to join the retirement committee in actualising the dream of the pension unit.
He recalled that during a previous meeting, the desk Officers had listed some challenges they face on the job, which range from lack of co-operation from their Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGA), the lack of incentives and called on the officers to make inputs to enable him understand the present status of the councils and note them.
Speaking further, Mr. Owhor said the commission will frown at refusal of retired persons to vacate offices as well as tampering with official records and duplication of names and charged the affected persons to desist from the act.
He called on the desk officers to furnish him with level of compliance of HLGAs with the directive issued by the chairman of commission during a meeting with HLGAs.
