Unpaid Salaries: NULGE Urges Edo Assembly To Intervene
The Nigeria Union of Lo
cal Government Employees (NULGE) in Edo State has urged the state House of Assembly to wade into the non payment of salaries of local government workers in the state.
The state Chairman of NULGE, Mr Young Ilenakhena, made the plea when he led members of the union on a peaceful protest to the assembly.
He expressed concern that some local government chairmen in the state had refused to pay salaries in the last nine months.
“ We started this protest since the beginning of this month against the non payment of salaries ranging from two to nine months, ” he said.
The union leader said that non payment of the council workers’ salaries affected 15 out of the 18 local government councils in the state.
“Other civil servants in the state have been getting their salaries regularly. We can no longer take it anymore.
“Mr Speaker, we want to place on record that local government workers in the state are now faced with untold hardship,” he said.
According to him, the state cannot shy away from its responsibilities, adding that local government councils were part of the state administration.
In his response, the Speaker, Victor Edoror, promised that the House would wade into the issue as quickly as possible.
“By tomorrow (Wednesday) at plenary, we will try to proffer lasting solution to the problem,“ he said.
The House, he said, would summon the local government chairmen to ascertain why they had not been able to pay salaries.
