The Nigerian Agricultural
Insurance Corporation (NAIC) has been urged to fashion ways of reaching out to farmers on how they can benefit from its schemes.
Our correspondent reports that the charge was made by the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke, when he received the Chairman, Board of Directors of NAIC, Lady
Chioma Ohakim, during a courtesy visit in his office in Calabar.
Imoke stressed that it was proper for rural farmers to avail themselves of its statutory functions and mandate.
According to him, “If properly structured, farmers will find succor in your objectives and I therefore call for a synergy between Ministry of Information and Department of Orientation to educate farmers against losses and the need to embrace the vision of the scheme.
The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Efiok Cobham, asserted that “agriculture remains the main stay of the economy hence when we came into office; we made it more attractive particularly to the younger generation.”
He decried the situation where agriculture still remain at the subsistence level, adding that it still offers more in curbing an economic challenge, disclosing that, “We try to be much more a regulator without involving in direct agriculture, we provide a regulatory environment to ensure that activities to boost efficiency in the sector are carried out.
“For us, agriculture has a direct relationship with land and during farming season, their conflicts cause farmers to incur losses, so your enlightenment exercise will acquaint our farmers of your
functions and how the scheme could be of benefit to them.”
Earlier, the Chairman Board of Directors of NAIC, Lady Chioma Ohakim, said a salient feature of the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Scheme is the subsidy that farmers enjoy on selected crops and livestock, explaining that for such items, the farmers pay only 50% of the premium while the Federal Government pays 12.5%.
According to her, “In the last five years, the corporation has insured both crops and livestock of Cross River State farmers worth well over N2 .7 billion with amount of claims paid in the same period totaling N23.2million.
She, however, solicited the support of the state government towards complementing its efforts in spreading its activities to the populace because Cross River has a large agrarian population and huge agro investment potentials while appealing that, “the state should continue on this positive trajectory by settling its outstanding premium subsidy obligation of about N3,092,579,440 for the period between 2013 and 2019.”
The chairman further disclosed that the corporation insures agricultural investments such as farm lands, tractors, heavy duty machines, vehicles and all other government owned means of economic productions.
