Groups Sign MoU On Waste To Wealth Project
As part of measures to-
wards actualising its waste to wealth project and poverty eradication in urban slums, Anpez, a Non-Governmental Organisation with specialisation in waste management, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Port Harcourt Integrated Favoured Women Traders, Cooperative Society.
Speaking during the signing of the MoU at Anpez centre at Eliozu, Port Harcourt, the Project Manager, Mr Niyi Lawal, said the Waste to Wealth (W2W) project was a “multi-country programme involving Nigeria, Cameroun and Uganda, with funding from European Commission, (EC) the Department for International Development (DFID) and Comic Relief”.
He said the project was being implemented by Living Earth Foundation UK in partnership with Anpez Centre for Environment.
Lawal pointed out that the project objective was to reduce the prevalence of poverty in the context of sustainable development and achievement of Millennium Development Goals, (MDG) in poverty reduction by 50% by 2015.
In addition, he said, “the project will contribute to target 4 of MDG7 (ensuring environmental sustainability) to achieve a significant improvement in the lives of slum dwellers by 2020”. He said 31 beneficiaries had been trained in pave interlocking stones.
The project manger described the signing of the MoU as a landmark achievement in the project implementation in the pilot local government areas of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor, and urged the development partner and beneficiary to make judicious use of the opportunity to enhance capacity development.
In her remarks, the President of the Port Harcourt Integrated Favoured Women Traders Cooperative Society, Nene Gudi, thanked Anpez for the opportunity and assured that the terms of MoU would be implemented for optimal benefit.
She said the project would be domesticated through intensive training and capacity development in the waste to wealth project.
