600 Students Receive Free Books In PH
Over 600 students from
two secondary schools in Rivers State have benefited from the free distribution of the literary works of Dr. Elechi Amadi under the pilot phase of Rivers State Government commissioned free books distribution to schools in Rivers State.
The two benefiting schools were Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta in Obio/Akpor local government area and Community Secondary School, Opobo town, in Opobo/Nkoro local government area.
The author of the books, Elechi Amadi who supervised the distribution exercise at the Government Girls Secondary School Rumuokwuta, described the exercise as novel in the history of the state, stressing that it would boost reading culture in the state.
Dr. Amadi urged the benefiting students not to see the exercise as a waste, but a way of improving their academic condition.
“The government has decided to distribute the books freely to you. It is not enough to get books, you must read it. A book not read is not useful” he said.
Also speaking the coordinator of the programme, Dr (Mrs) Priye Iyalla Amadi said that the exercise was commissioned by Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to promote reading culture and enhance education of children in Rivers State.
Dr (Mrs) Amadi urged the students to cherish the books, saying they contain message from the Governor geared towards making them better citizens of the state and the country in general.
In her speech, the principal of Government Girls Secondary School Rumuokwuta, Mrs Pat Bakel thanked Governor Amaechi for making the school one of the first beneficiaries of the gesture.
Mrs Bakel also described Captain Elechi Amadi as a living legend whose life should challenge the students to improve their educational opportunities.
Highpoint of the event was the distribution of “The Great Pond” and “Woman of Calabar” to the students.
