The Ceasefire That Failed
Boko Haram is an Is
lamic fundamentalist sect whose aims include the violent overthrow of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the introduction of the Sharia as the main legal system of Nigeria. It also believes that Western Education is satanic and should therefore be destroyed in the- country. And since the declaration of these aims, the sect had carried out many acts of destruction of lives and properties mainly in the northern parts of Nigeria including the Federal Capital territory, Abuja. Places destroyed include schools, houses, churches, markets and offices of the United Nations Organization in Abuja.
It should be noted that because of the devilish activities of the Boko Haram sect in the northern parts of Nigeria, the United States of America declared war on the sect classifying it as AL Qaeda affiliate and a foreign terrorist organization. We should emphasize that this declaration will make the United States of America mobilize intelligence and resources to combat what is now known as the ninth deadliest terrorist group in the world.
A statement issued recently by the US State Department in Washington indicated that the United State Government was invoking Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act as amended and section 1 (b) of Executive Order 13224 to designate Boko Haram and Ansaru as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has since accepted the US classification of Boko Haram and Ansa as Terrorist Organizations. According to the Nigerian Ambassador to the United State of America, Mr Ade Adetuye, the decision to declare Boko Haram and Ansaru as foreign terrorist organizations was taken at a meeting in the United States Department and he took immediate steps to inform the authorities in Abuja. He stressed that the continued intransigence of the Boko Haram sect compelled Nigeria to proscribe the organization on June 4, 2013. We must recall that apart from this the Federal Authority in Nigeria also declared a state of emergency in states such as Adamawa, Borno and Yobe on May 14, 2013, to deal militarily with the Boko Haram Terrorist Organization in those parts of the country.
But in spite of these, Boko Haram terrorists have continued to cause mayhem and deaths of innocent citizens in the northern parts of the country. The latest in this chain of killings included soldiers who were massacred in their hundreds in eight Borno villages by the Boko Haram terrorists. Earlier, nine soldiers were killed by terrorists at Madagali, a border town between Borno and Adamawa States. We gathered that the soldiers were on a mission to repel an attack at Izhe when they were ambushed by heavily armed Boko Haram insurgents. In Konduga, thirty-nine people were killed while two thousand houses. were destroyed by Boko Haram sect during an attack.
Furthermore, forty-three pupils of the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi were killed in Yobe State early this year. The insurgents who went on a killing spree without any challenge also burnt down students hostels, classrooms and forty houses.
Reacting to all these, a former Head at State, General Muhammadu Buhari condemned the continued violence in Borno State. He described the ideology of Boko Haram as devilish and senseless, stressing that it should not be given space in any civilized society. Similarly, the nineteen governors of Northern States condemned the killings and urged the Federal Government to arrest the situation.
In fact, the deadly activities of the Boko Haram terrorists ‘have become extreme. Thousands of people are killed weekly by these terrorists who only believe in killing innocent children and people and destroying properties whenever they operate. Thousands of people are now refugees in their own country because of the satanic activities of these insurgents. Currently they are operating in villages in the north-eastern parts of Nigeria killing and destroying at will in defiance of the state of emergency imposed by the Federal Government of Nigeria. These are really devils who do not have any sense of justice or civilized way of behaviour. They are barbaric and extremely inhuman.
Nevertheless, about two weeks ago, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Alex Badey announced a ceasefire with the Boko Haram-insurgents. He also revealed that a deal brokered by the Chadian president, Mr Idris Derby would lead to the release of the Chibok School girls kidnapped over six months ago. Because of this, he ordered the Nigerian troops fighting the insurgents to ceasefire so that the peace agreement could come into effect. But he did not realize that the insurgents tricked him. Instead of keeping to the peace deal they used the opportunity of the ceasefire to launch a fresh attack on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States killing and destroying villages and capturing Mubi, the home city of the Chief of Defence Staff Mubi which has a population or 300,000 is said to be the third largest city in Adamawa State. Following these fresh attacks three thousand people who have fled their homes are now refugees in their country. However, from every indication the ceasefire was a deceit and it has failed.
The Federal Government of Nigeria should therefore forget the ceasefire and intensify its military operations in the affected parts of the country and bring these terrorists to their knees. Desperate diseases should be confronted with drastic measures. The Boko Haram terrorists should not be handled with kid gloves. Their activities have shown that they do not deserve mercy. They should therefore be confronted with full military force.
