Strike Paralyses Maritime Activities In Bayelsa
Following the inability of
the Bayelsa State Government to combat sea piracy on the waterways, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands.
The Tide correspondent gathered the activities in many parts of Bayelsa were grounded last Thursday as commuters were stranded at most of the jetties in the state.
It was gathered that Southern Ijaw, Brass, Ekeremor and Nembe Local Government Areas that are not motorable to Yenagoa, the headquarters of the state were worst heat by the strike.
Our correspondent learnt that boat terminals in Yenagoa and at Ayama Jetty, Commuters were stranded as their faith hangs in the balance of what to do to reach their destination.
The union boss, Mr Lioyd Sese said they are ready to resume operation when ever government decided to tackle the ugly situation over the task force it set up with people of criminal character while union members were left out.
According to him, the union also requested that they be included in the Federal and State government subsidy re-investment programme (SURE-P) as they have not benefitted from the programme since its inception.
According to him, “This time, we are embarking on an indefinite strike because government has decided not to live upto its responsibilities as cases of sea private attacks on our waterways are increasing by the day”, stressing that, “we went on a 21-day warning strike, and midway the Transport Commissioner pleaded that we suspend the strike with the promise that in two weeks time government would meet our demands, but uptil date, nothing has happened”.
He posited that sea pirates rob traders of their money and valuables and in some cases rape the women on board after robbing them, and that they cannot operate in such hostile environment that their members are not protected.
The union chairman, Mr Sese further threatened that, “And if government cannot protect the lives and properties of boat drivers operating in the state, then there is nothing we can do than to stop work and allow government to take over the Maritime transportation business”.
