RSG Votes N3bn For Farmers
The Rivers State government has earmarked the sum of N3bn for small holder farmers in the State.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Chindah who made this known during the 2014 World Food Day celebration in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the state governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi approved the money to enable farmers at the grassroots level have a sense of belonging.
Chindah who represented the governor directed farmers to liaise with the various Supervisors and agriculture development officers in their various local government areas to enable them access the fund through the State Ministry of Agriculture.
He further called on farmers in the state to avail themselves of their co-operatives to make sure the funds reached them.
Speaking on the theme of the celebration which is “Family Farming, feeding the World, caring for the earth”, the State agric boss said the theme was intended to raise the profile of family farming and small holder farmers.
He said great emphasis was laid on the significant role of family food security and nutrition, improving livelihood and managing natural resources amongst others.
He said it was against this backdrop that the government decided to put in place policies and enablement for farmers in the state.
Chindah explained that the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA), was a collaboration between the State and federal government while, the GES allows farmers in the state to access the e-wallet vouchers even as he advised farmers to register with the scheme to leverage on its abundant benefits.
On the FADAMA 111 project, he said the state has registered 1079 Fadama users Co-operatives (FUGS) and 89 Fadama Community Associations, adding that the sum of N718,759,260 has been made available to farmers in poultry, fish production, oil palm processing, cassava and vegetables production amongst others.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Otonyetarie Okoye who represented the agric boss said the development of the agriculture sector was not a government responsibility alone.
She said the efforts put in place by the government would only be realized through the support of all stakeholders.
The event saw Chief Dumnia Lucky from Ghana Local government area emerging as the best farmer of the year in Yam and Cassava production.
