The Ijaw Youth
Council (IYC) Eastern Zone has said that the continous pollution of the Eastern Niger Delta by oil companies poses a great danger to its existence.
The new president of the Eastern Zonal Chapter of the Council, Mr. Peter Igbifaa who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, also described the zone as the hub of oil and gas activities in Nigeria.
Mr. Igbifaa said that, because of this, there is need for multinational companies operating in the Eastern Niger Delta to adopt a friendly approach in their operations as far as the environment is concerned.
He said that the new executive of the Council is ready to partner with multinational companies to ensure that their operations does not pose danger to the environment and health of the people of Eastern Niger Delta.
Mr. Igbifaa also decried the high rate of polio and HIV (AIDS) in the zone.
“Investigation has proved that lack of awareness has made some of our rural women become a victim of circumstances in the hands of some of the employees in the oil and gas companies operating in our communities.
“My team of committed women shall carry out an aggressive grassroot enlightenment against this deadly disease and its anti-social consequences,’ he said.
The IYC president further said that, gone are the days when the people sit at home and watched oil activities carried out in the area without involvement, noting that this time around the people will participate in the oil and gas activities.
