Colleagues, Associates Eulogise Late NUJ President
It was a night filled with emotions and grief as colleagues and associates gathered in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital last night to pay tribute to the former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), late Ndagene Akwu.
The night started with a candle light procession after which speakers after speakers paid glowing tribute to the late National President of the NUJ.
The National President of the NUJ, Mr. Mohammed Garba described his immediate predecessor as a great reformer, who during his days as president of the union saw his opponents as friends irrespective of their political divide.
Garba said that Nigerian politicians have a lot to learn from the former NUJ president, who did not see poltics as a do or die affair.
The NUJ President also charged those present to see the occasion as a moment on their lives as it would be any body’s tomorrow, and charged the Rivers State Council of the Union to ensure good relationship with the family.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari described the late Ndagene as a bridge builder and an unassuming man, who was full of love and respect to those he interacted with, irrespective of their status in the society.
The Commissioner, who was represented by a Director in the Ministry, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, said that the life of Ndagene Akwu must be a lesson to every Journalists in the State emulate, and establish good relationship with God Almighty.
“Everyone is challenged to examine his life. What matters is when you die, where would you go? She said.
A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke, said that “Ndagene was our worthy, ambassador”, stressing that his life should serve as a challenge to up coming journalists to put in their best and leave a mark in the profession.
Others who also spoke at the night include the Chairman of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission, Chief Ngo Martyns-Yellowe and the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of the Union, Mr. Opaka Dokubo.
He would be buried on Saturday.
