Literary Festival Renamed PH Book Festival 2014
The Rainbow Book Club has changed the name of the forthcoming Garden City Literary festival 2014 to Port Harcourt Book Festival 2014.
The Executive Director of the Rainbow Book club Mrs Koko Kalango said at a press briefing in Port Harcourt last week that the change of the name was in line with International Best practices.
Mrs. Kalango said that similar events in other parts of the world were named after the host cities, stressing that the term “Garden City” has generated much concern as there are other garden cities in other parts of the world.
According to her, Port Harcourt’s nomination as UNESCO world book capital 2014 has generated a lot of interest in the city, especially as a literary hub.
“The name change to Port Harcourt Book festival would help consolidate the city’s reputation as a haven for literary activities.
“There are apparently several Garden Cities around the world and on the world wide web, which creates a lot of room for ambiguity, however, there is only one Port Harcourt.
“The name change therefore makes us easily and quickly recognised by internetsearch engines.
She also said that changing the wording from “literary festival to book festival widens the content and scope, thereby creating a wider appeal for the festival as well as institutionalised the festival which will henceforth be run by the Port Harcourt Literary society and Rainbow Book Club as project managers.
According to her the festival which commences on April 2014 would feature an international literature exhibition, celebrities reading to children a launch of PH WBC theme song, specials drama presentation and excursion around the city as well as a reading with Nigeria’s president Mrs Kalango also said that the book centre, planned as a literary hub for the city would comprise a state of the art library, a bookshop a writers residence, a theatre and a conference centre.
