Ondo Earmarks N3bn For Agricultural Support
Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has said the state had earmarked over N3 billion for the implementation of various agricultural programmes in the state.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi , said this in Iju in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
He made the disclosure during the flag-off of the 2013 Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES) and commencement of the 2013 planting season in the state.
Mimiko said agriculture was the major occupation of the people of the state and remained the highest source of revenue in the state.
He commended the federal government over the introduction of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda(ATA), saying it would ensure self-sufficiency in food security.
“GES programme is a joint collaboration between the federal and state government in implementing increase in the production of food in the state.
“It is our hope that the various agro-dealers already pencilled down for this programme will not disappoint our farmers.
“The state input supply agency has been mandated to monitor the programmes and be ready to supply the deficit agro-input that may arise so as to ensure the success of the programme in the state
“We had identified series of problems confronting the agricultural sector in the state and that is the reason we earmarked huge sum of money to the sector, “ Mimiko said.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Kole Ogunsuyi, said 216,000 farmers were captured in the farmers census in 2012 and 2013.
He said the farmers would have access to subsidised inputs such as fertiliser and seeds from accredited dealers.
Ogunsuyi commended Harvest Plus, an international organisation, for their collaboration with the state government in the introduction and release of Vitamin A fortified cassava cutting.
