RSG To Close Down Street Markets
Rivers State Government says henceforth all street markets would be closed down, as government would no longer condone lawlessness by traders within and outside the city centre.
Commissioner for Urban Development Physical Planning, Dr. Tammy Danagogo gave the hint while on an enforcement exercise to shut down the Slaughter market inside the abattoir at Trans Amadi yesterday in Port Harcourt.
The measure follows directive by government after the Inter-Governmental Forum on Tuesday where the Governor ordered for swift action to curb the menace.
Dr. Danagogo said the season of grace has elapsed, “now we believe that we must go into the second phase. The first phase was the phase of interaction, enlightenment and re-orientation. We are now entering the second phase where we feel that interaction, dialogue is not enough again for our markets so we are going into the stage of enforcement.’’
He added, “We will close down markets where we feel the people are recalcitrant. If closing down the market helps the situation, then we may think about re-opening the market. But if we see that it does not help the situation then we will go into the third phase, which will mean demolishing some markets.”
Conducting enforcement at the Slaughter Market on Wednesday, the Urban Commissioner directed that all the stalls be shut as the Taskforce swinged into action by arresting traders whose wares were displayed on the road kerbs.
The Commissioner had summoned the leadership of the market to a meeting after which he ordered that the market be shut down indefinitely until they comply with government directive.
He warned that until a proper arrangement was made, the market would remain shut, while warning traders in other road side markets to either vacate of face the full wrath of the law in the alternative that the market leadership had to enter into an undertaking to abide by the law.
Dr. Danagogo while lauding in traders the abattoir for being law abiding urged them to stay within the precinct of the slaughter or be closed down as well.
The Urban Development Commissioner also assured of government plans to build a modern abattoir capable of housing activities of traders.
Speaking on behalf of traders in the area, Alhaji Ibrahim Maisundu commended the action of government as he lamented that they had been unable to check the activities of roadside traders in the area.
He blamed the menace on some indigenes from Oginigba community who collect money from traders and allot them stalls along the road, while promising that those that do business in the abattoir would remain law abiding.
