TIMARIV Records 30 …To Clamp Down On Keke, Bikes
In its quest to enforce traffic regulation in Rivers State, the state Traffic Management Authority (TIMARIV) says it has recorded about 300,000 vehicular impoundments so far.
Controller-General of the agency, Mr Nelson Jaja made the disclosure while speaking at a media interactive forum organised by Silverbird Communications at the weekend in Port Harcourt.
The TIMARIV boss said the arrests were part of the statutory mandate of the agency set up in 2008 to tackle the swelling traffic problems in the state.
With a staff strength of over 700 traffic marshals, Jaja lamented the poor public cooperation and support, and posited that the body still lacks funding to meet its challenges.
Against this backdrop, Jaja said the body is set to beef up its revenue base by synergizing with other government agencies like the Ministry of Works, Sanitation Authority, while raising the level of traffic enformcement.
He also revealed that due to public outcry, it has sacked over 40 of its marshals over misconduct, noting that, “TiMARIV does not belong to Nelson Jaja, but to all of us and we are ready to live up to the expectation of the Governor who has set it up.”
Consequently, the Controller-General of TIMARIV has made public plans by the authority to enforce the ban on motorbikes and Keke-NAPEP (tricycles) in the upcoming weeks.
He disclosed that the body will set up a team to arrest defaulters in five local government areas, where the use of Keke and motorcycles (commercial) were banned.
The local government areas include those of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Eleme, Oyigbo and Ikwerre Local Government areas.
Warning those riding personal motorcycles to wear helmets and other safety gadgets, Mr Jaja insisted that, “before we release you, we will see your tax clearance and other revenue payments made to the state.”
