RSG Shares Relief Items To Flood Victims
The Rivers State Government Flood Victims Rescue Committee has kick-started the official visit to communities and camps where victims are presently taking refuge in Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government areas where some relief materials were delievered to alleviate their sufferings.
Head of the Committee, the State Deputy Governor, Engr Tele Ikuru, who led members of the team on the visit, said the effort was necessary in order to swiftly cushion the impact of the flood on the victims.
Ikuru also said that the committee would use the opportunity to take census of the affected persons as well as the level of damage done to properties and institutions in the areas.
The deputy governor, who sympathised with the victims, advised them to take heart, noting that the incident was a natural disaster, which no one could have prevented.
He restated the government’s commitment to ensure the alleviation of the victims’ sufferings, saying that the government was desirous of seeing the flood recede as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, the ravaging flood has submerged the entire premises and buildings of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.
The flood, which washed away valuable documents, also destroyed properties worth millions of naira belonging to the institution.
Following the overflow of the institution, the authorities have closed down the school and suspended all academic activities temporarily, as all classrooms and hostels have been flooded.
In a statement made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, the school’s Public Relations Officer, Prince Charles Amadike-Otoboh, said the flood devastated the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) building, students’ hostels, science laboratory, school dormitory, demonstration farms, among others.
According to the statement, other items submerged are computers, books, laboratory equipment, air-conditioners, radio station transmitter, filling cabinets, among other valuable properties worth millions of naira.
It quoted the Provost of the college, Dr Nkasiobi Silas Oguzor as appealing to the federal and state governments as well as National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to their aid, saying that over 200 staff have so far been displaced.
While thanking the Rivers State Government and the leadership of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government council for intervening to assuage the sufferings of victims of the flood disaster, Oguzor called on both governments to extend their benevolence to the institution to reduce the impact of the flooding on the school community.
