Abonnema Wharf Demolition Triggers Hike In Rents
Displaced tenants of Abonnema Wharf shanties demolished by the Rivers State Government are lamenting hike in house rent in Port Harcourt.
The Tide reports that as part of the urban renewal programme of the Rivers government, Abonnema Wharf shanties, one of the most crowded areas in Port Harcourt was demolished recently.
Lamenting his ordeal in Port Harcourt on Friday, a displaced tenant, Mr Goddy Wakama.
He explained that the cause of the hike in house rent was as a result of high demand for accommodation by victims of the Abonnema Wharf demolition.
Another displaced tenant, Mr Manners Preye noted that the increase in house rent was also caused by lack of alternative accommodation arrangement for displaced tenants by the state government.
Preye said that there was a rush by accommodation seekers resulting from the demolition of Abonnema Wharf shanties, and the landlords were demanding N5, 000 and above per month for a room.
Mrs Ruth Deinbo, a displaced mother of five from the demolished Abonnema wharf, said that her family needed accommodation urgently.
She said that most of the landlords she approached for accommodation were demanding N5,000 for a room apartment with arrears of two years.
Mr Jenewari Abua, also from Abonnema wharf, lamented that landlords were asking for between N5,000 and N6,000 a room for two years arrears.
“In fact, we are in trouble, where can we get money to secure accommodation, we are calling on the state government to intervene by compelling landlords to reduce rent,’’ he added.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli said that government had compiled a list of landlords of Abonnema Wharf shanties and would soon invite them for payment of compensation.
