Canada, C’River To Strengthen Partnership
The Cross River Government has expressed its determination to strengthen partnership with Canadian donor agencies to deliver good governance to the people.
Governor Liyel Imoke said this on Monday when he received the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Chris Cooter, who paid him a courtesy visit.
Imoke said the partnership would be mostly needed in the areas of health, education, forestry and tourism.
According to him, the state has a strong support from Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) especially in Primary Health Care.
He said there was need to engage additional staff to support the health initiatives, adding that the state would like to key into Canadian health programme to enable the people to acquire skills.
According to the governor, the state is committed to the establishment of a polytechnic to complement the two existing universities.
He said that emphasis would be on core professional courses to enable graduands to become self-employed or be employers of labour.
Imoke reaffirmed the state’s desire to meet the MDGs goals of 2015 and solicited for the cooperation and support of Canada in that direction.
On its forestry programme, Imoke disclosed that one of the challenges of the sector was the control of forest degradation due to “illegal logging as well as creating an alternative means of livelihood for the communities.”
Earlier, Cooter said he was in the state to explore areas of cooperation and support for the government.
He said Canada first trained 200 Nigerian teachers in 1970 and that the number had increased.
Cooter disclosed that his country had training programmes for about 104 countries on vocational education, skill acquisition and employment.
He promised to work out areas in which Canada could provide assistance to the state through a bilateral agreement.
