NURTW Frowns At Illegal Parks In PH
As efforts are being intensified by the Rivers State Government to bring sanity on the roads, a call has gone to the state Police Command to dismantle all illegal motor parks within and outside Port Harcourt.
The Branch Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nkporlu-Oroworokwu Motor Park, Mile 3, Diobu, Mr Cyril Amadi made the call in a chat with The Tide correspondent in his office in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Mr Amadi said such illegal parks have been obstructing free-flow of traffic along the roads as drivers load and off-load their passengers indiscriminately.
He said the obstructions caused by the activities of these drivers have been of great concern to the union, and expressed optimism that if such illegal parks were banned, traffic hold-ups often experienced in such areas would be a thing of the past.
According to him, the drivers hired the services of touts who sometimes embarrassed commuters or even made away with their money, handsets and other properties, all in the name of luring passengers into their vehicles.
Mr Amadi also noted that the state government and the Local Government Council were by these illegal activities, losing huge revenue which would have been used to help develop the state.
The secretary hinted that when properties were reported missing, they could not found them because the vehicles did not load at the designated motor park.
While appealing to the Port Harcourt City Local Government Council to assist the union reactivates the Mile 3 motor park of the pot-holes that have been causing a lot of damages to their drivers, the NURTW branch scribe however, enjoined the drivers to observe the traffic rules and regulations while on the road during and after the festive period by adhering to speed limit, and over-loading. He urged them to make safety as their watch-word.
