Make Teaching Of History Compulsory
The Federal and State Government have been urged to make History a compulsory subject in both secondary and tertiary institutions in the country.
The former Head of the Department of History and Administrative Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Atei Mark Okorobia, said this in a paper entitled: “The Meaning and Nature of History”, delivered at the launching of two books; “The Relevance of History, Today and The Utility of History And Historical Scholarship”, written by Mr. N-Ue Samuel at the weekend.
Dr. Okorobia, who was represented by Chief Macleod Amamina, described History as a powerful tool for teaching the young on how to behave and think in culturally and socially appropriate way and to provide a basis is for warning societies about their future.
The University Don also said that Nigeria will become a better place for all if the leadership are properly schooled on the foundation and relationship of the diverse ethnic groups that make up the country.
In his keynote address, Dr. Kingdom E. Orji, regretted that the government has refused to accord priority to the teaching and learning of History in the nation’s educational institutions.
“As a nation, we realise that most of our challenges today in the nation building project emanate from our poor grasps of History as a concept”, he said.
The Author of the books, N-Ue Samuel said that the books were written to stimulate interest in History as a subject in schools.
Mr. Samuel said that adequate knowledge of History would create opportunities for interaction among various communities thereby enhancing peaceful coexistence in the society.
