RSG Moves To Demolish Structures Under Powerlines
There are obvious indications that Rivers State Government would soon embark on massive demolition of structures encraoching on Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company’s right of way.
A source of The Tide who is highly placed in the state Minsitry of Power disclosed in an interview that the structures were inconveniencing the ongoing rehabilitation work on 132 KVline of Afam Power Plant.
The source, who pleaded anoninity disclosed that the structures are within Okoloma Afam, Uzoma, Konkon, Oyigbo, Elelenwo, Rumuibekwe and Rumukurushi.
Others, according to the source, are also found along Rumuomasi, Elekahia and Ogbunabali.
The source, who would not disclose when the demolition exercise may begin maintained that the State Executive Council in conjunction with PHCN arrived at a decision that for free flow of electricity, urgent actions would be done on the structures encroaching on the power line, particularly in the three LGAs in the state namely Oyigbo, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City.
He said after the three LGAs, those structures encroaching on powerlines in other local governments would be looked upon.
It would be recalled that Federal Government had consistently expressed dissatifaction over structures encroaching on PHCN rights of way in the country.
Apart from affecting power distribution, the said structures are said to pose danger to the lives of Nigerians inhabiting the said structures. Analysts blame the delayed action of the demolition on the inability of the past military adminsitrations in Nigeria to act accordingly
