Delta Spends N1bn Monthly On Higher Institutions
The Delta government spends about N1 billion on its tertiary institutions monthly,
Prof. Hope Eghagha, the Commissioner for Higher Education, says.
He said in Asaba on Sunday that the amount covered salaries of staff and other monthly exigencies of the various institutions.
He disclosed that N400 million was allocated to the state’s University at Abraka monthly, while the three polytechnics and two colleges of education and the College of Physical Education get N40 million for their bills, including salaries.
Eghagha explained that the government decided to establish many higher institutions in the state to cater for the admission needs of its indigenes who often faced problem of securing admission into higher institutions in the country. The commissioner admitted that the state’s institutions were facing problems of infrastructure and other learning facilities but noted that the situation was not peculiar to them.
He, however, added that in spite of the challenges, the state government was planning to expand hostels and libraries as well as Information Communication Technology centres in the schools through its intervention programmes.
He noted that the intervention programme was aside from the grant and accreditation fund that government usually disbursed directly to the institutions annually.
“The intervention funds are funds dedicated in the Ministry of Education, which we use where we know that there is a need for them,’’ Eghaghasaid.
