Court Refuses Bail For 57 Militant Suspects
A Port Harcourt High Court has refused bail for about 57 suspected militants arraigned before it by the state authorities.
Justice Boma Diepiri while refusing the plea of suspects counsel, Kenneth Asuete, however, said that the matter would be given accelerated hearing.
Justice Diepiri submitted that in order to reduce time lapse, that the charges should not be re-read to the suspects as demanded by state counsel Mrs. O.I. Okoye.
Suspects Counsel Barrister Asuete, had equally opposed the re-reading of the charges to his clients on the grounds that it would waste the court’s time.
On the burden of the court in taking witnesses, Justice Diepiri said that three witnesses be brought to the court based on arguments by Mrs. Okoye that most of them were security agents who are on duty outside the state.
Justice Diepiri on hearing the plea of both sides assured both counsels of expeditious hearing, saying that the suspects were aware of the charges and adjourned the matter for further hearing to next Friday.
The suspects were arrested last year November by the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) one year after the amnesty declared by the Federal Government expired. They were subsequently handed over to the police authorities for prosecution.
The suspects were charged for alleged membership of secret cults and unlawful possession of fire arms, contrary to section 3(1) of Robbery and Firearms Act Cap Laws of the federation.
Though the suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges but investigations had revealed that the suspects, who have earlier embraced amnesty and granted presidential pardon in 2009 reportedly returned back to the creeks where they allegedly carried out their nefarious activities.
The JTF claimed that the suspects confessed to crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping.
