Cleric Condemns Stealing In Church Premises
A Catholic cleric, Rev. Fr. David Iheanacho, says it is an abomination for criminals to steal a worshipper’s property within the church premises.
“A worshipper in the church has presented both himself and property to God and for a criminal to dare God and tamper with his life or property, it is a challenge to Almighty God,” Iheanacho said on Tuesday.
The priest spoke to newsmen at Ihitte Aforukwu Mbaise, Imo, in reaction to Sunday’s theft of a Toyota Camry car belonging to one Mr Francis Onyeukwu, a Senior Correspondent with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Port Harcourt Zonal Office.
Onyeukwu and his family had gone to Mbaise to drop his father-in-law on Saturday and attended 9 a.m. mass on Sunday at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Ihitte-Aforukwu Mbaise.
He observed his car had been stolen after the mass.
Iheanacho, who described the theft as the first of its kind in the church, said the local church community would offer special service to God, challenging Him to take over the case.
“Since over 20 years of my ordination as a priest, this is the first time I have witnessed this kind of thing in my church.
“It is a challenge to God Himself and the perpetrators must not go free.”
On his part, Onyeukwu said a formal complaint had been made at the Ahiazu Divisional Police Headquarters about the incident.
“In the event of any useful information on the car, you can contact the nearest police station or call 07085652217,” he said.
The car, a 1996 Toyota Camry model, bore registration number LAGOS GG 874 EKY, chassis number 4TSK11E5SU487 and engine number 5S5606885 before the theft.
It was painted dark green and cost the owner N980,000 in August 2008.
The vehicle has the NAN and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) stickers on the front windscreen.
The registration number of the car was also engraved on the front and back windscreens, door glasses and the side mirrors.
