A’Ibom Evacuates 80 Abandoned Children
The Akwa Ibom Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare last Wednesday evacuated an additional 80 abandoned children suspected to be witches and wizards from a private orphanage in Eket.
The Tide’s source reports that the figure brings to 98 the total number of children so far removed from the custody of an NGO, the Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN).
The Chairman of the State Task force and Child Trafficking Rescue Team, Mr Wisdom Udoka, who gave the figure to newsmen in Eket, said that 18 were removed last Tuesday.
He said the 98 children were in the newly constructed “Security Village” in Uyo, and that the new accommodation had the facilities to ensure the comfort and healthy development of the children.
Udoka said that the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare would evacuate the remaining children in the custody of the NGO.
CRARN runs a shelter for some 200 abandoned children accused of witchcraft by members of their communities in Akwa Ibom.
Udoka said, “The administration of Chief Godswill Akpabio has provided a brand new home for the children; they will stay in the home pending when they will be reunited with their families.
“The best place for children to grow is under the care of their parents and we want to discourage the idea of keeping children in temporary shelters permanently.”
Mr Bassey Antia, the Administrator of the centre, said that the NGO was still left with more than 100 children and was prepared to comply with the directives to hand them over to the state government.
