Rivers Delicacy Wins Cooking Contest In Lagos
A Rivers State indigenous delicacy prepared with ripe plantain (Biate Mbana) and fresh fish pepper soup by Mrs. Helen Bob-Manuel emerged tops at a recently organised cooking competition in Surulere, Lagos.
Tagged, “Cooking for Jesus”, the competition, which was organized by the Women Fellowship of the Christian Community Church in Surulere, also saw the emergency of a Camerounian dish, Ndole soup, prepared by Mrs. Okome Dibo-Ebong as second.
In an interview with The Tide shortly after the keenly contested event at the church premises last Sunday, the leader of the fellowship, Mrs. Rose Abisagboola recalled that the group had also organized symposia for members in other areas of endeavour.
She stated that the cooking contest was aimed at “getting women more involved in their kitchens”. According to her, “most women are not seriously involved in cooking for their families, preferring rather, to buy cooked food outside for their families hence the competition is to show how orderly and simple the handling of kitchen environment and the entire home should be.” Mrs. Abisagboola thus urged women to de-emphasize patronizing food vendors, saying that, “cooking for their families unites the home, and also teaches the girl-child the art early enough”.
The winner of the competition, Mrs. Bob-manuel, on her part, attributed her victory to God and the role of her parents while she was a teenager.
