Navy Arrests Two Persons For Alleged Oil Theft
The Nigerian Naval Ship, NNS Delta, has arrested two suspected oil thieves with their two boats filled with a substance suspected to be crude oil.
Parading the suspects on Wednesday in Warri, Delta, the Commanding officer of the ship, Commodore Henry Babalola, said his men had acted promptly following intelligence report, especially on the location the oil was being siphoned.
Babalola said the suspects were intercepted on Tuesday on their way from Ogbogbene in Warri South Local Government Area.
He warned perpetrators of the economic crime to desist as the Navy had taken control of the waterways to checkmate crime.
He said that naval patrols on the waterways had been intensified to stem the tide of illegal bunkering.
Babalola said that the suspects would be handed over to the appropriate agency for further investigation.
One of the suspects, Benjamin Edumegere, said he was involved in illegal business due to poverty and unemployment.
The other suspect, John Tombra, said he did not know that it was crude oil he was hired to carry.
“I was hired to ferry one of the boats to a safe point for discharge into tankers and as I was ferrying the boat, we were arrested,” Tombra said.
He said he did not know that it was an offence to lift crude oil illegally and pleaded for pardon.
