Gov Orders Seizure Of Unregistered Motorcycles
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom on Wednesday directed the immediate seizure of unregistered motorcycles plying the roads.
The governor gave the directive in Uyo at a meeting with members of the Akwa Ibom Professional and Commercial Motorcyclists Association (APCOMA).
They agreed to set up a committee to work with the government in the next few days to ensure the provision of reflective jackets and security numbers to commercial motorcyclists operating in the state.
Akpabio had alleged that information at the disposal of the government showed that 70 per cent of crimes in the state were perpetrated by motorcyclists.
He said the meeting was necessary because security was a joint responsibility of all the citizens, hence the need to seek the cooperation of the cyclists in stemming the tide of crime in the state.
The governor pleaded with the APCOMA members to help fish out the bad eggs among them and control infiltration of their trade by unidentified persons from other states.
He thanked the cyclists for the support given to his administration and advised them against over-speeding and other acts capable of breaching the peace.
The APCOMA President, Mr Udo Okpong, lauded the governor
for protecting low income earners such as cyclists.
Okpong pledged the association’s support, saying its members were ready to cooperate with the government in flushing out criminals in their midst.
