Speed Limiter: FRSC Nab 130 Drivers In A’Ibom
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says it has arrested 130 commercial drivers in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, for failure to install the Speed Limiting Device on their vehicles.
The FRSC Unit Commander in Eket, Mr Nicholas Akueme, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen, last Tuesday.
The FRSC had commenced enforcement of the device on commercial vehicles on February 1.
“Motorists are complying but not much and we have not relented in our efforts to bring defaulters to book.
“So far, we have arrested 130 commercial drivers for refusal to install the device on their vehicles,” Akueme said.
He outlined the advantage of the device to include enhancement of life span of vehicles, reducing speed and less consumption of fuel.
Akueme, however, said that, some of the commercial vehicles had started installing the speed limiter.
“The only problem we have is commercial drivers, these are the ones that are having low level compliance,” he said.
He said, the command had begun enlightenment campaign in churches and other public places to make motorists imbibe the best road safety habit for “fuller lives and safer roads’’.
“If drivers are properly enlightened it would go a long way in reducing the rate of accidents and also make our work easier,’’ he said.
The unit commander said that, 50 per cent of road accidents were caused by speed limit violation.
He advised road users to always take precautionary measures to prevent accidents.
