The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will tomorrow join Journalists the world over to celebrate the 2016 edition of the world Press Freedom Day.
A statement by the Chairman of the Council, Mr. Omoni Ayo-Tamuno, called on journalists in the state to attend the ceremony enmass, saying that it is one day every journalist worth his salt should take seriously.
“Our job entails a lot of hazards. We’re always fighting for one good or the other for society, and for this purpose, those who feel the good for the generality would negatively affect their personal interests see us and treat us as enemies.
“This has led to the death of several journalists the world over. Those who have lost their lives or suffered one form of misfortune or the other in the course of fighting for the good of all need to be remembered. This is the essence of the World Press Freedom Day”, he said.
The Chairman revealed that the celebration, which will hold at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, will feature, among others, a lecture to be presented by Associate Professor, Gabriel B. Okon of the Mass Communication Department of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.
