RSG Set To Begin Green Urban Renewal
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has hinted of plans by his administration to commence a green urban renewal programme as part of efforts to return Port Harcourt to its Garden City Status.
Wike gave the hint during an inspection tour of the Nkpogu-Trans-Amadi link bridge in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
The governor stated that government will sand-fill some of the swampy areas, especially along the Nkpogu-Eastern Bypass Road and create green park for relaxation.
The aim, he further explained, is to attract businesses and tourists to the city, since security was fast improving and more people coming into the state.
In his words, “What we intend to do is that in the next three and half years, and by the Grace of God, we will know that the Garden City is back, and we will know that the lost glory has come back”
He stated that currently the city’s sanitation status has improved tremendously, recalling that before the administration came to power heaps littered the whole of the metropolis.
“We have not gotten to the level where we are satisfied but by the time we are through with the basic infrastructure, we will try and see how we can plant some greens on some of these roads and make sure that refuse contractors are given support, so that we don’t need to have refuse all over the places” the governor added.
Consequently, the governor has expressed satisfaction with the level of work on the Nkpogu-Trans-Amadi link bridge, expressing hope that the contractor will deliver by March as earlier promised.
Wike, who underscored the importance of the road, stated that soon, motorists will heave a sigh of relief as the route will be open for traffic as soon as the bridge is completed.
