Council Scribe Hails NGO’s Empowerment Initiative
The Secretary of Ogoja
Local Government in Cross River, Mr James Aninege, has commended an NGO, Foundation for Destiny Transformation, for its youths’ empowerment programmes in the council.
Aninege made the commendation in Ogoja, in an interview with newsmen recently.
He said the NGO trained some youths in the area in various skills which had enabled them to establish small and medium enterprises.
The secretary said also that many of the youth from the local government now had the opportunity to go to school through the NGO’s scholarship awards.
He noted that by so doing, Foundation for Destiny Transformation, had contributed immensely to the development of the area.
“The best form of development is empowering human beings and adding value to their lives; the chairman of the foundation is giving back to the society and this is commendable,’’ he said.
The council’s secretary said that the most respected individuals in society were those who put smiles on the faces of others without expecting anything in return.
He said that the foundation had contributed to poverty eradication in the council by investing in human development.
“The empowerment will help to reduce the rate of unemployment among the people and also expose the minds of the youth to entrepreneurship which leads to self-sustenance and productivity,” he said.
Aninege called on beneficiaries of the foundation’s empowerment programmes to reciprocate the gesture by utilising the acquired skills to better the society.
“Those that are empowered materially should apply the funds and equipment for the purpose for which they are meant because to whom much is given, much is expected,” he added.
He, however, advised the foundation not to politicise its activities in order to ensure the realisation of its vision of service to humanity.
He disclosed that more than 30 persons were targeted to be empowered in the council during the first phase of the programme.
One of the beneficiaries of the skill acquisition programme, Mr James Ubi, told our correspondent that he was highly appreciative of the gesture.
Ubi said that the programme had made him self-employed and promised to train others.
