Road Safety: Expert Urges FG To Deploy ICT Gadgets
A civil engineer, Mr
Taiwo Olowosulu, has called on the Federal Government to deploy Information Communications Technology (ICT) gadgets in the promotion of safety on the roads across the country.
Olowusulu, a lecturer in the Ahmedu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, made the call in an interview with The Tide source in Abuja, recently.
According to him, ICT can clearly play an important role in making roads safer.
“Information Technology is playing very important roles globally by using the capabilities of mobile networks’ solutions with global coverage.
“In advanced societies, ICT makes it possible to have a passenger information system, a device that tells you how long it will take you to get to your destination.
“Also ICT can be used to enhance the ability to arrest traffic rules defaulters instead of physically deploying traffic personnel to man the roads.
“By deploying gadgets such as cameras, traffic personnel can still get details of defaulters on the roads, from the confines of their offices, by tracking them through their plate numbers.
“So you can’t escape if you break traffic rules because your plate number will be snapped and you will be caught and charged for such offences.
“These methods are effective in other societies that are serious about development,” he said.
Olowosulu called on government to look into effectively funding the ICT sector so that road safety can be guaranteed across the country.
