The Nigeria Union of
Journalists (NUJ), has called on chairmen of Caretaker Committees of the 22 local government councils in Rivers State to ensure they run the affairs of their respective local government councils for the benefit of the masses.
Chairman of NUJ in the state, Omoni Ayo-Tamuno, made the call, on Tuesday, when he led the executives of the union to pay a courtesy call on the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Khana Local Government Council, Comrade Sunny Bekanwa, in Bori.
Ayo-Tamuno said, “We as a union are advocating good governance. We believe that although councils have limited funds, chairmen can still take care of staff welfare and do some other things that the masses can always remember them for. If every local government chairman makes an impact during his tenure, Rivers State will be better off.”
He commended Bekanwa for his efforts in the fight against crime and insecurity in Khana LGA, and encouraged him to go all out to eradicate crime and criminality in the area.
Responding, Sunny Bekanwa, expressed happiness that journalists and members of the public were appreciative of the efforts of the council to reduce insecurity in the area.
Bekanwa said, “we appreciate your concern on what we are doing here in Khana. When I was appointed and sworn-in by Governor Nyesom Wike, he directed me to eradicate insecurity in Khana. The governor said I should go and fight insecurity, especially, kidnappings.”
He lauded security agencies and religious organisations in the area, as well as journalists for their support and encouragement in the fight against insecurity in the area.
