Delta Earmarks N2.2bn For Students’ Special Assistance Scheme

tary, Delta Bursary and Scholarship Board, Mr. Peter Amromanoh says the state government has earmarked N2.2 billion for Students Special Assistance Scheme (SSAS) in the 2015 fiscal year.
He made this known during a budget defence before the state House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation in Asaba.
He said the amount included part of the 2014 commitments of the board to the scheme.
Amromano said that the board in 2014 had a total commitment of 40,624 beneficiaries of the scheme and the board was requesting for N986 million to pay for it.
He added that the board was proposing another N1.2 billion to pay 55,000 would-be beneficiaries, bringing the total amount to N2.2 billion.
According to him, it is the will of the board to obtain releases to take care of the bursary of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Law School students.
“Presently, the board has over 864 outstanding beneficiaries for the past three years,’’ he said.
On the internal scholarship scheme, he said the board was able to pay 50 per cent of the beneficiaries which included 400 undergraduates, 100 master degrees and 40 PhD for 2010 and 2011.
He stated that the board had proposed N274 million to cater for the 2015 awardees and for the existing commitment of N74 million for the 2011 beneficiaries.
Amromanoh said N388 million had been proposed for 2015 fiscal year for the external scholarship scheme to adequately provide for the existing 43 beneficiaries of the scheme abroad.
According to him, the board will possibly make provisions for new beneficiaries in 2015.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Daniel Mayuku, urged the board to ensure good spread of the schemes to enable every qualified student to benefit from it.
