Don Wants Sanctions On Substandard EIA Reports
An Environmental
Expert and Emeritus Professor of Geosciences at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Professor Dagogo Fubara has called for sanctions against those who produce substandard Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports.
Speaking at a recent function in Port Harcourt Professor Fubara said that most Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Reports in circulation were below prescribed global standard, stressing that the situation has become a source of concern to professionals in the industry.
He said the situation underscores the need for the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) to take a critical look with a view to sanctioning those involved in such quackery.
While stressing that many complaints of substandard reports were being received on the matter, he stressed the need for practitioners to follow the prescribed standard already in place in the production of EIA Reports.
The Don stressed the need for adequate fieldwork and research instead of staying in their houses to produce Environmental Impact Assessment Reports.
Meanwhile, Professor Dagogo Fubara has blamed successive governments in Nigeria for showing lack of commitment towards the development of the Niger Delta.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, he noted that a Nigerian Ambassador in Holland once suggested moving the people of Niger Delta to the North since the region appeared difficult to develop, stating that the attitude of that Ambassador reflected the thinking of successive Nigerian Governments about the Niger Delta.
He also decried the failures by successive governments in the country to adopt and implement the recommendations of the Willink Commission Report which described the Niger Delta as a special area that required a special attention to develop.
