Transporters Lament Low Patronage
A day after the New Year holidays, transporters in Port Harcourt expressed mixed reactions over low patronage.
Our reporter who monitored some Motor Parks in Port Harcourt observed that some motor parks were empty with very few persons travelling out of the city.
Mr Peter Ejiofor, a driver at the Mile 3 motor park told The Tide that the patronage was low compared to what it used to be in previous years. “People are not travelling out of Port Harcourt for now, the way they did last year. By this time last year, we were not looking for passengers, because we were very busy. May be due to the various bomb blasts in the Northern part of the country, people are scared to go back immediately, till the end of the month when all the political parties must have conducted their respective primaries,” he opined.
He said, there are more passengers coming back to Port Harcourt than going out , noting that most of the drivers take the risk of combing for passengers along the road enroute Owerri-Elele as the case may be, with the aim of getting full load of passengers while coming back.
Mr. Jonah Eji a commuter at the park urged federal and state governments to ensure that this year’s primary focus should be to complete all the ongoing road projects to enhance easy transportation in the state.
While lauding Amaechi’s massive road rehabilitation projects, he urged him to use his second tenure to consolidate and initiate more road network in the state.
