Don Advises Govts On Judicious Use Of Taxes
A University lecture, Dr
Meshach Umenweke, has urged governments at all levels to judiciously utilise taxes to restore public trust in their payment.
Umenweke of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka made the call in Enugu while presenting a paper on ‘Taxation for Good Governance’ at the ongoing 2013 Law Week in the coal city.
He said the government should ensure that taxes paid by the public were used to improve their welfare.
The don said taxes were paid to assist governments in carrying out their social responsibilities.
“If the government provides the citizens with the necessary social amenities, they would not be forced to pay.
“The governments at all levels should live up to their expectations by judiciously utilising taxes paid by the citizens in order to restore public trust in them,” Umenweke said.
He also urged the governments to address the menace of multiple taxation which had adversely affected businesses in the country.
He also urged the citizens to perform their civic responsibilities by paying their taxes as and when due.
“Always be law abiding by fulfilling your obligations and assist the government by paying your taxes on time.
“Paying your tax gives you the right to expect good governance from the government and the right to take up a case for misappropriation of funds,” he said.
In his contribution, Mr Jude Odinkonigbo, also of the Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, attributed the problem of good governance in the country to corruption.
“Corruption hinders good governance; an arrest to corruption would enhance good governance in the country.
“The governments should endeavour to bring back the confidence of the citizens by living up to their responsibilities,’’ he said.
The Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Mr Steve Oruruo, pointed out that the government had the duty to protect its citizens in all ramifications.
Oruruo said that if the government provided the people with social amenities, they would pay their taxes without hesitation.
Reports that the law week which commenced on Monday will end on Friday with a bar/bench forum and dinner.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
