By: Lady Godknows Ogbulu
Staff of the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic (CEAP0LY), PortHarcourt, would now join their colleagues in other polytechnics to enjoy a serene place of relaxation during their leisure hours with the presence of the newly built Club House on campus.
The Club House, known as Legacy House, a brainchild of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), CEAP0LY Chapter, with cosy apartments including a bar, restaurant, VIP, office for club management, a sit-out for games, six conveniences among others was aimed at enhancing the capacity of staff in performing their duties maximally.
Commissioning the Club House in PortHarcourt, at the Weekend, the Chairman, Governing Council, CEAP0LY, Senator (Engr) Lee Ledogo Maeba, commended the ASUP for the edifice, attributing its actualization to the mutual and peaceful relationship between ASUP and management of the institution.
Maeba said” on behalf of council, I congratulate ASUP for this edifice. I have gone inside and i can say I am very happy for the progress that have been made here. It is only where there is a good relationship between the ASUP and management that we can have an institution with such developmental strides, where everybody is happy either the student, or staff, or management or council”.
“That interrelationship of peace and of mutual respect is very important to me. That was why when I saw the memo in council about providing this land for the union to build a club house and a request for financial assistance, I waisted no second to urge the council to approve the request. I also approved the grant to assist the union to actualize its set goals and i believe it went a long way to start this project”, he stated.
As a response to the call of support by ASUP, Maeba said the council would give the sum of #2million to assist in the completion of the internal work of the edifice.
Speaking at the occasion, the Rector, CEAPOLY, Dr Samuel B. Kalagbor, noted that the Legacy House was brought to fruition following the team spirit, commitment and sacrifice of the union members.
Commending the ASUP, Kalagbor said the leadership had not only redefined unionism but displayed an act worthy of emulation and expressed hopes that successive administrations would take a cue to raising the bar of the institution.
In his words, “ I hereby congratulate the ASUP administration for redefining what unionism is all about in this institution. I’d like to say that without purpose, team spirit, commitment and sacrifice on the part of members of ASUP, we would not have been here today to commission the Legacy House. I belief that other administrations that will come after you will also take a nitch to raise this institution”.
While noting that the Legacy House required expansion, Kalagbor pledged management’s support particularly in partnership with the leadership of the union to ensure a parameter fence to prevent interference between social and academic events.
