Between Communal Killings And Peace
Nigeria has a lot of problems. And one of these problems is the recurring decimal of communal killings in the country as offshoots of internal conflicts. This is in spite of the efforts of the authorities to stem the frequent cases of communal crisis. These killings have in no small measure dented the very image of the nation as a country united by one common destiny. A number of these killings which have brought heavy pains and sufferings to Nigerians can be highlighted.
In the meantime, no fewer than 11 persons were killed recently following communal violence that occurred in Ado-Odo in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. Because of this crisis, the state government imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in the area.
According to reports, the violence was as a result of dispute over a traditional ruler’s stool in Ogun State. The reports added that tension started building up when the feuding camps engaged in a battle of wits. But this exploded into violence that led to the death of several persons in the community. The battle was mainly between the Eguns and Aworis in the community.
However, a detachment of policemen was dispatched to quell the mayhem which later spread across the whole community. It was alleged that the community had been experiencing some skirmishes since the Olofin of Ado-Odo, Oba Abdullateef Akani Adediran ascended the throne in May 2009.
As already indicated, we should give peace a chance in our various communities in the country. Nothing can be gained by killing one another. Now those that have died have gone forever. We cannot bring them back to life. That is why we should always sue for peace wherever we may be in Nigeria. This is because it is peace that makes for progress, and not violence or crisis.
In a similar development, three persons recently lost their lives and property worth millions of naira destroyed in a renewed communal violence at Obosi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The crisis followed a dispute over who should control land sales in the community. The disagreement took a dangerous turn when two rival groups engaged themselves in sordid war of fists, which left three persons dead. Several others also were wounded and property worth millions of naira destroyed.
However, a team of policemen has reportedly arrested some of those engaged in the fight, in which lethal weapons were freely used. Briefing newsmen in his office at Police Headquarters in Awka, spokesman for the force, Mr Emeka Chukwumeka said, the police had deployed men to keep 24-hour surveillance in the community. He assured the people that the police were on top of the situation.
Also, the police in Bauchi State said recently that 16 persons were killed and 20 houses burnt following communal violence in Kurum village, Bogoro Local Government Area of the state. Speaking shortly after the incident, the Secretary of Zaar Elders and Traditional Rulers’ Council in Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa councils, Mr Bukata Zhadi said three more persons receiving treatment in a hospital died, thus bringing the total number to 19. According to him, many more people were in critical condition in various hospitals across the local government.
Perhaps, it is interesting to note that even Rivers State has had its own share of the cankerworm of communal killings in Nigeria. Of course, not long ago, no fewer than 10 persons were reportedly killed in a fresh wave of crisis that erupted in two neighbouring communities of K-Dere and B-Dere in Gokana Local Government Area of the state. According to reports, many other persons were injured and houses razed.
This came a week after five persons were killed and 200 houses set ablaze in a similar crisis in both communities. Both the police and the state government condemned the incident, said to have been triggered following disagreements by fans of two opposing English Premier League club sides after a match by the two sides. And I think it is unthinkable that people in such remote communities would fight and kill themselves over football club sides far away in the United Kingdom when their own home country club sides are not even reckoned with or known. It is a show of unpatriotic zealousness.
In any case, as already stated, we cannot gain anything in this country by killing one another. No matter the nature of dispute, degree of acrimony and provocation, we should learn jaw-jaw than war-war. We should always bend to discuss our problems and find peaceful solutions to them instead of frequent killing of our fellow citizens. Shedding of innocent blood should be avoided at all times.
In fact, methinks that all those who shed blood should be condemned by the authorities and those who wish the country well. Those involved in crises should always search for the causes of their problems instead of killing and shedding innocent blood.
Nevertheless, the nation is not impressed with this barbaric and bloody behaviour. Those interested in killing fellow human beings should turn a new leaf and think of some progressive and reasonable ventures that would be of benefit to this country. What gain do we derive from shedding blood? Absolutely nothing! We should, therefore, attempt to apply dialogue wherever there is disagreement. Dialogue is far better than killing and shedding blood. Shedding blood does not contribute anything meaningful to the growth of this country.
